Situated between the city of Bordeaux and the mouth of the Gironde lies Saint-Estephe, the largest appellation in the Medoc region. Due to its northern location, St Estephe is generally lower in temperature than its neighbours. The area is mostly composed of a gravel covered plateau which overlooks the Garonne River, and as a result has excellent drainage.
The soil here is typical of the Medoc, but with a layer of limestone and clay allowing the vine to get good nutrition from the ground. The St Estephe region in France produces tannic wines that historically mature earlier and have a fruitier taste.
St Estephe regions include Cos D’estournel, Chateau Calon-Segur and Chateau Montrose.
